How to ensure safety with a water heater?

February 27, 2013 by Paradigm Plumbing in Jupiter

DSC00831-300x225You might be surprised to know that water heater is the device that can cause the most damage but still it is the most neglected part of your house. We take it for granted and increase the probability of unfortunate incidents. Water heater maintenance gains special importance in areas where the nature of water is ‘hard’.

It is important to conduct a safety check for a good start. Start from the kitchen because this is where the meat thermometer is. Open the faucet and let the water run till it is hot. Place a cup under it and check the temperature with the meat thermometer. The recommended water temperature for homes that have young children is 120⁰ F. if you have a temperature higher than that, it is time adjust the temperature using the adjustment dial and re check the temperature after a few hours.

Next step is to look for the temperature pressure release valve which has a metal lever attached to it. Pull the lever to open the valve. This will release water and you will be able to hear a rushing sound. Once you close the valve, the water should stop flowing. If this does not happen, this means that the minerals have shut it close and the valve needs to be replaced.

These safety measures help prevent explosion. If the temperature control valve is malfunctioning, the heater will keep on heating the water and both water temperature and pressure will rise to dangerous levels. If your relief valve i not operating properly, it’s high time to give a call to a professional at Paradigm Plumbing.
