What to do if a foreign object gets flushed?
If an object gets flushed down the toilet, first turn off the water supply to the toilet, then try to retrieve the object by hand if possible, and if not, use a plunger to dislodge it; if that fails, try using a plumbing snake to reach further down the drain, and if all else fails, contact a plumber.
Common foreign items that are flushed
You should not flush paper towels or tampons because they do not break down quickly enough in water, which can lead to clogs in your toilet and sewer pipes, potentially causing plumbing issues and backups. Essentially, they are designed to absorb and hold their shape, unlike toilet paper which is meant to disintegrate rapidly when flushed.
How these objects can cause damage:
Unlike toilet paper, these items expand when wet, creating blockages in pipes. If flushed, they can end up in waterways, harming marine life, creating environmental concerns. Clogged pipes due to flushing non-flushable items can lead to costly plumbing repairs.
Alternative to flushing tampons and pads:
Wrap objects in toilet paper before throwing them away. Some brands may claim their products are “flushable,” but it’s best to consult local regulations and always verify if they are truly safe to flush.
Some other common items that should not be flushed down the toilet are:
- Dental floss: Can clog pipes and cause environmental damage. Floss can turn into a net that catches other debris and can wrap around parts of a septic system.
- Cat litter: Animal waste can introduce parasites into the water supply and the litter can absorb toilet water and clog pipes.
- Medications: Unused or expired medications can cause water quality issues that affect public health and the environment.
- Cooking grease: Warm grease can congeal in pipes and form a clog.
- Cigarette butts: Contain toxic chemicals that can lead to serious clogs.
- Paper towels: Do not break down when flushed and can build up inside pipelines.
- Diapers: Do not break down like toilet paper and can cause serious toilet clogs.
