Comparing Washing Machine Types
Consumer Reports published a great article recently that helped shoppers compare the pros and cons of the washing machine types on the market today. Let’s review those.
Agitator Top-Loader versus High Efficiency (HE) Top-Loader
Agitators are the least expensive option and have shorter cycle times. The agitator can be tough on your fabrics and typically will use more water, causing longer drying times.
High Efficiency (HE) washers have a higher cleaning quality when compared to those with an agitator. With the lack of the agitator, there is more capacity. Although they use less water, their cleaning cycles tend to be much longer, often 60-80 minutes and aren’t much better on their gentleness on the fabrics. One challenge for these washers is their deep tub, which can make it difficult for some users to reach the clothes at the bottom.
Front-Loaders versus Compact Front-Loaders
The front loaders tend to be more gentle on the fabrics and use the least amount of water, offering a shorter dry time. Wash times tend to be longer on the front-loaders, similar to those for the HE top loader and have been known to develop some mold, so keep a close eye on that.
The compact version is a perfect alternative when space is tight and can be stacked with the dryer for even more space savings. However a known downfall for the compact versions is that they tend to vibrate. The matching compact dryers are only available in electric, so if gas is your choice, you many want to consider an alternative.
