What Are Drain Traps For?
Drain trap’s purpose is to hold some water in order to keep the sewer gas smell from escaping the drain. There are traps in every drain. If you feel a strange odor in any room the first thing to check is that whether the drain trap is dry. If it is dry, then it means that sewer gas is the cause of the smell as it can escape now. The easiest way to get rid of this problem is to run some water down the drain so that the drain trap holds it.
At some places, the location of the drain is very obvious such as the toilet where you can always see some water standing. If you look to the backside of the toilet you can see the shape of the drain through which the water exits has the necessary curve. Other plumbing fixtures such as kitchen or bathroom sink do not have the traps where someone can see them. They are usually hidden in a cabinet. When you look at the sink you cannot see the standing water but if you follow the drain lines you can see the required U or S shape where the water stands to trap the sewer gas. On the other hand, large bathroom fixtures such as bathroom tubs and showers also have drain traps but they cannot be seen as they are hidden under the floor. The tip is to use all the drains at least once every couple of weeks to keep water in the traps.
